小傳是記敘他人生平事跡的文章。記敘較全面、篇幅較長的，可叫“傳”或“傳略”，如《泰戈爾傳》《名人傳略》等；記敘較簡單或只是有選擇地寫出某人幾件有代表性的事件，篇幅較小的，叫作“小傳”或“事略”。無論是傳還是小傳，都不應該寫成傳記小說或故事，而應寫出人物的出生地、出生年月、主要經歷等。寫作時，應注意以下幾點。
一要深入了解所寫人物的事跡，注意對材料的選擇和分析，寫出人物的個性和風貌。任何文章都要圍繞主題來寫。為此，首先必須搜集大量的資料，然后認真地分析其特點，確定寫作中心。只有圍繞中心和主題來選擇材料，其材料才有用，其作品才有靈魂。同學們千萬要注意避免出現以下情況：只是羅列材料，事無巨細，芝麻豆子攤一堆，沒有一條線索來貫穿，也沒有一個統一的主題。這樣寫作是不成功的。

三要有文學色彩。傳記是寫人的。為此，在寫作中一定要抓住人物特點，記述其重要的有代表性的大事和最能表現人物個性特征的典型小事。不寫大事，無法表現人物的貢獻；不寫小事，無法使人物鮮活起來，甚至還往往會使文章流于一般化與淺薄。要使傳記寫得生動感人，就應該認真研究人物的生平事跡、性格特征和思想品德，用創造性的筆法來展現人物的思想面貌和個性特征。為了把人物寫活，就必須從各個側面挖掘和占有足以表現人物特征的典型事例和細節，即最能體現這種特征的思想、言論和行動及逸事、趣聞等，進行描寫和渲染。
