牛津大學的歷史
牛津大學是英語國家中最古老的大學。在12世紀之前，英國是沒有大學的，人們都是去法
國和其它歐陸國家求學。1167年，當時的英格蘭國王同法蘭西國王發生爭吵，英王一氣之下，把寄讀于巴黎大學的英國學者召回，禁止他們再去巴黎大學。另一說法是，法王一氣之下，把英國學者從巴黎大學趕回英國。不管如何，這些學者從巴黎回國，聚集于牛津，從事經院哲學的教學與研究。于是人們開始把牛津作為一個“總學”，這實際上就是牛津大學的前身。學者們之所以會聚集在牛津，是由于當時亨利二世把他的一個宮殿建在牛津，學者們為取得國王的保護，就來到了這里。12世紀末，牛津被稱為“師生大學”。1201年，它有了第一位校長。1213年，該校從羅馬教皇的使節那里得到第一張特許狀。
